What is by-product rendering?

By-product rendering is a process used to convert animal by-products into useful materials.

When animals are processed for food, up to 50% of the animal is not used for human consumption, like bones, fat, and organs. Instead of wasting these parts, rendering facilities break them down into valuable products.

Here is how the process works:

• Collection: By-products are collected from slaughterhouses, farms, and food processing plants.

• Grinding: The materials are ground up into smaller pieces to make the processing easier.

• Cooking: The ground materials are cooked at high temperatures. This helps separate the fat from the solid materials.

• Separation: After cooking, the mixture is separated into fats, oils, and protein.

• Purification: The separated products are further processed to remove any impurities.

End Products:

• Tallow and Grease: These fats can be used in animal feed, soap, candles, biodiesel and much more.

• Protein Meal: The solid materials become protein-rich meals used in animal- or aqua feed.
